Prepare an upgrade
Choose a release and click Prepare upgrade. Molt backs up, merges, uploads a draft and compares your pages.
Preparing an upgrade needs a paid plan. See Plans and billing.
Start it
- On Themes, pick the release in the theme's menu. The newest is selected.
- Click Prepare upgrade.
You can leave the page. The work runs on Molt's server, and the upgrade appears under Recent activity.
What happens

| Back up the theme | Saves every file, and adds the copy to the Backups page |
| Merge your customizations | Combines your changes with the new release. Overlapping edits go to a model |
| Upload the result as a draft theme | Creates a new unpublished theme and checks every file against the store |
| Open key pages on both and compare | Opens your pages on the original and the upgrade |
Most upgrades take about five minutes. A major release with many overlapping edits can take longer.
If it stops
The page shows the reason. If the upload had started, Molt removes the unfinished draft. Your themes stay as they were. See Troubleshooting.
How many themes you can have
A Shopify store holds 20 themes, and each upgrade adds one. Remove drafts you no longer need.
